I know that most of us are starting to feel like our world is coming apart at the seams. If it’s not one thing causing that feeling, it’s another. So hopefully this short anecdote will help someone out there not only to feel a little better but to gain perspective.
Last week was tough for me at work. It felt like no matter how I tried, I just couldn’t accomplish what I wanted. All I want to do is reach my full potential and be consistent. It becomes frustrating when, even after I’ve been patient and persistent, the obstacles in my way just won’t give. On Friday, I decided to take the opportunity during an email chain to share my true feelings with my team. My supervisor answered back, saying “I am sorry Denae, I hope things start looking up. This week has been the same for me.” Then she added another message below that one, a saying she had found from somewhere. It read:
Staying positive does not mean that things will turn out okay. Rather, it is knowing that YOU will be okay no matter how things turn out.”
I have to say, as soon as I read that, I thought, Wow, what a great perspective to have. So I guess the moral of this little story is, whenever you’re feeling helpless or down in the dumps, not only is it truly helpful to know that you’re not alone, it is also very important to keep in mind that a lot of the time, we can’t control our circumstances but what we can control is our own attitudes.
